about The New Phonographers
In an unusual triple bill, Jonathan Way, Martin Bland, and Christopher DeLaurenti present personal and perhaps unusual approaches to "phonography," a term that not only denotes the resurgence of field recording that emerged in the 1990s, but also suggests experimental approaches to spinning CDs and vinyl.
In a rare performance, Martin Bland presents his Randomized Control Trials, a set of randomly shuffled CDs that mix and meld snippets by Seattle musicians, including trumpeter Jim Knodle, Mudhoney's Mark Arm, and others drawn from the rock, avant, and jazz scene.
Jonathan Way mixes and processes recordings made in the remote mountains of northeastern Washington, revealing the textures of snowbrush, horsetails, and pine bark alongside electronic manipulations.
DeLaurenti Plays Stravinsky: Using a handmade cardboard turntable, Christopher DeLaurenti interprets the music of Igor Stravinsky as preserved on 78 rpm records. Pieces to be performed include the "Piano-Rag Music" and the Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra.
This performance also celebrates the release of Martin Bland's CD, "The Randomized Control Trials" as well as the re-release of Christopher DeLaurenti's collection of intermissions secretly recorded at orchestra concerts, "Favorite Intermissions: Music Before and Between Beethoven-Stravinsky-Holst."
"Favorite Intermissions: Music Before and Between Beethoven-Stravinsky-Holst" is a collection of intermissions secretly recorded at orchestra concerts. The disc was the subject of a feature article in the New York Times last May and appeared on countless blogs along with profiles by the BBC and Gramophone China.
Alas, Universal Music Group, the corporate parent of Deutsche Grammophon (DG), did not have a sense of humor about the "Favorite Intermissions" cover, a parody of DG's classic look.
After legal action, "Favorite Intermissions" was pulled from distribution. Now, after six months of negotiations with Universal Music Group, "Favorite Intermissions" has been permitted to resurface in a limited edition with a redesigned look the first week of January 2008

Jonathan Way: Kalaloch/Skagit
(Autumn Records ‘Leaves’ series, leaf 020)

kalaloch:
1 through coastal forest
2 clear stream flecked with foam
north jetty:
3 seafoam
4 ocean rain
skagit:
5 raindrops on broadleaf maple leaf
6 skagit flow
i made this collection of recordings during a season i spent working and traveling in western washington.
the field recordings are from three locations along the pacific coast and skagit river, at times in the form of
"contact" recordings (using an ordinary microphone):
textural distortion from seafoam scattered on a beach after a late winter storm; percussive rhythms from a
large maple leaf sheltering the microphone from rainfall along the skagit towards the beginning of summer.
Order from Autumn Records or as mp3's from Other Music

In Resonance

Series of 5 CDRs recorded/produced onsite by:
Steve Barsotti
Chris DeLaurenti
Dale Lloyd
Perri Lynch
Jonathan Way
Sound is difficult to contain, it leaks and mingles and overlaps in persistent and naughty ways. In Resonance
aimed to embrace this aspect of sound and create a group show in which the works co-existed and resonated
together, as sounds do in life. Each of the artists was asked to document how they experience the show, from
overall sounds to sonic details, from visitor comments to footsteps, malfunctions and conversations.
The artists are all members of the Seattle Phonographers Union, a group dedicated to listening and the art of
field recording and improvisation.
The CDRs were recorded and produced on the spot during the run of the exhibition and limited to 100 copies.
The In Resonance exhibition featured sound-based artwork and installations by:
Climax Golden Twins, Jim Haynes, Jesse Paul Miller, Thurston Moore, Steve Roden, Marina Rosenfeld,
Toshiya Tsunoda, Steven Vitiello, Jennifer West, Steve Peters and Christine Wallers
and in-gallery performances by:
Emil Beaulieau, Eyvind Kang, Matt Shoemaker, and Phonographers Union
